The Kingdom of Cambodia is a constitutional monarchy in South-East Asia covering 181,035 km², with an estimated population of 16.2 million, 80% of whom live in rural areas.
The country is among the least developed countries in the OECD list of official development assistance recipients.

With its two main reservoirs (the Mekong river and the Tonle Sap lake), it has abundant water resources, although they are unevenly distributed.
Access to good-quality drinking water and to a satisfactory service nevertheless remains low.
The country is highly vulnerable to the effects of climate change (heavy flooding followed by periods of drought), compounded by growing urbanisation and dam building.
In some areas the water is of poor quality: high arsenic levels, excessive hardness and alkalinity, bacteriological pollution.
Rural sanitation is difficult, with limited access to improved facilities, particularly in remote areas. Open defecation rates remain high.

Our work
ACTING FOR WATER
IN CAMBODIA
Since 2012, HAMAP has been running an integrated Water Resources Management programme in the Stung Sen basin.
Our key activities: installing boreholes fitted with solar pumps and water towers, building gravity-fed distribution networks serving thousands of households, setting up and training village management committees so that they can operate the infrastructure independently, building hundreds of family latrines and running hygiene awareness sessions in schools.
Our local partner Rainwater Cambodia monitors the works and provides ongoing training for the committees.

Local support for access to water and sanitation – phase 2
From 2020 to 2021, HAMAP-Humanitaire continued its support for access to water and sanitation in the commune of Putrea. Run with Rainwater Cambodia, with support from the Agences de l'eau Loire-Bretagne and Rhin-Meuse, this second phase benefited 1,830 people.

Training water management committees for sustainable management
From 2020 to 2021, HAMAP-Humanitaire trained water management committees in the commune of Putrea, in the Stung Sen basin, for the sustainable management of the infrastructure. Run with Rainwater Cambodia, with support from the Agence de l'eau Rhin-Meuse and the Office international de l'eau, the project benefited 67,267 people.

Access to water and sanitation – Stung Sen basin, phase 2
From 2019 to 2020, HAMAP-Humanitaire worked in the commune of Putrea, in Preah Vihear province, to further improve access to water and sanitation in the Stung Sen basin. Run with the Tonle Sap Authority, this second phase benefited 4,500 people.
