In rural areas, access to drinking water in Senegal has improved considerably in recent years thanks to investment in water supply networks and the professionalisation of water infrastructure management.
Significant disparities nevertheless persist between areas.

In many rural communes, particularly those with fast-growing populations, some villages and hamlets remain inadequately served or still depend on distant water points, which restricts access and creates health risks.
Sanitation remains one of the main rural development challenges in Senegal.
A large share of households still has no improved sanitation facilities, while the management of wastewater and faecal sludge remains limited in many places.
This situation contributes to environmental damage and to the persistence of diseases linked to poor hygiene.
Strengthening sanitation infrastructure and raising public awareness are therefore priorities for lastingly improving rural living conditions.

ACTING FOR WATER
IN SENEGAL
For several years, HAMAP-Humanitaire has supported Senegalese local authorities in developing essential public services for water, sanitation, hygiene and food security.
The projects carried out in the communes of Sandiara, Bokiladji and Vélingara aim to bring a lasting improvement in the living conditions of more than 40,000 direct and indirect beneficiaries, through an integrated approach combining infrastructure, capacity building and local governance.
The work includes drawing up water development plans, building and extending drinking water supply networks, building water towers, standpipes and water kiosks, and providing subsidised connections for the most vulnerable households.
The projects also improve sanitation by building family and school latrines, putting in place innovative wastewater treatment solutions and making use of sanitation by-products.
Alongside this, many awareness activities are run with local people to promote good hygiene practice, protect water resources and ensure facilities are managed sustainably.
Local authorities also receive technical support to strengthen their skills in planning, running public services and monitoring infrastructure.
Through this work, the partners help reduce inequalities in access to essential services, improve public health, make territories more resilient to climate challenges and support local economic development.

Improving access to water, hygiene and sanitation in the Nassouroulahi neighbourhood, Vélingara
The project is part of the partnership between HAMAP-Humanitaire, the association APIT Huma Dev and the commune of Vélingara. It addresses access to water, sanitation and food security in the Nassouroulahi neighbourhood, which is particularly vulnerable to flooding, waterborne disease and economic hardship.

Improving access to water in Bokiladji, Matam
The project grew out of a shared finding by the commune of Bokiladji, the NGO APIT Humanitaire, HAMAP-Humanitaire and the Senegal River Basin Development Organisation (OMVS): several villages in the commune face major difficulties in accessing drinking water. The villages of Bondji Waali, Bondji Ndiobo and Bondji Bababé, in the far south-east of the commune, are among the worst affected.

Drinking water supply and sanitation – commune of Dabo
From 2020 to 2022, HAMAP-Humanitaire supported the commune of Dabo, in the department of Kolda, in improving its drinking water supply and sanitation. The project benefited 8,800 people.

SIVOM SAGe and Sandiara cooperation: lasting access to drinking water and sanitation
The project is part of the decentralised cooperation between SIVOM SAGe (France) and the Commune of Sandiara (Senegal). It responds to the growing need for drinking water and sanitation in outlying villages that are poorly served.

Raising awareness of waste sorting and collection – Dakar
From 2016 to 2018, HAMAP-Humanitaire ran an awareness campaign on waste sorting and collection in Guédiawaye, on the outskirts of Dakar. Run with ENDA Lead, ASPEB and 100 % Citoyens, it benefited 800 people.
