Improving access to water in Bokiladji, Matam

The project

THE CONTEXT

The project grew out of a shared finding by the commune of Bokiladji, the NGO APIT Humanitaire, HAMAP-Humanitaire and the Senegal River Basin Development Organisation (OMVS): several villages in the commune face major difficulties in accessing drinking water. The villages of Bondji Waali, Bondji Ndiobo and Bondji Bababé, in the far south-east of the commune, are among the worst affected.

Although the commune has many water facilities, the low yield of groundwater in this basement rock area of eastern Senegal and the isolation of these villages still force people to rely on hand-dug pits, seasonal ponds or unsafe water points, with serious consequences for health and living conditions.

To provide a lasting solution, the project will draw on the Moudéry borehole and build a water supply network serving the three Bondji villages.

AIMS AND ACTIVITIES

Objectives

  • Help improve the living standards of the people of Bondji Waali, Bondji Ndiobo and Bondji Bababé through lasting access to drinking water
  • The villages of Bondji Waali, Bondji Ndiobo and Bondji Bababé are connected to the Moudéry borehole by a drinking water supply network
  • Households have better access to water through standpipes and the water kiosk
  • People are aware of the issues around drinking water, hygiene and protecting the facilities
  • Local managers have the skills needed to operate and maintain the infrastructure
  • A transitional management system in line with OFOR guidelines is in place before the network joins the public service delegation system

Main activities

  • Studies and tenders : Additional technical studies and award of the works contracts.
  • Moudéry borehole : The Moudéry borehole equipped to supply the future network.
  • Primary network : A primary network built from the borehole to the Bondji water tower.
  • Secondary network : A secondary distribution network built in the three villages.
  • Standpipes : Two public standpipes built.
  • Water kiosk : A water kiosk set up.
  • Training for managers : Training for the future managers and local actors of the water service.
  • Awareness raising : Awareness raising on good water use, hygiene and looking after the facilities.
  • Transitional management : Support in setting up the transitional COPIFOR/operator management system, in line with the Senegalese institutional framework.
