HAITIImproving the water network and essential services of the town of Saint-Marc
Haiti has relatively substantial water resources, but their use is limited by a lack of infrastructure, weak investment and the recurring effects of natural disasters.
The gap between urban and rural areas is marked: towns, notably Port-au-Prince, and the main urban areas have higher access thanks to public networks and standpipes, while rural areas often depend on wells, unprotected springs or fragile community systems.

Deteriorating infrastructure, rapid urban growth and an insecure context also make networks harder to maintain and extend.
Sanitation in Haiti remains one of the weakest basic service sectors.
Despite some progress, access to improved sanitation facilities is still limited, particularly in rural areas and informal urban neighbourhoods.
A large share of the population still faces open defecation, which increases health risks and the contamination of water sources.
Wastewater collection and treatment systems are all but non-existent at scale, and solid waste management also remains inadequate in most towns.

ACTING FOR WATER
IN HAITI
In Saint-Marc, Haiti's third-largest town, HAMAP has laid and rehabilitated 9.6 km of pipework in 6 town-centre neighbourhoods and connected 592 households to the network.
The system is run by SESAM, the first public-private partnership for water in Haiti.
In Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite, a new drinking water network has been built, with a borehole, an extraction system and connections for a pilot neighbourhood.
Awareness sessions on hygiene and on paying for water accompany every project.

Rehabilitation of the Saint-Marc water network, phase 1
Begun in 2022, the first phase of the rehabilitation of the water network of the town of Saint-Marc was carried out by HAMAP-Humanitaire with SESAM, OREPA Centre and the town council of Saint-Marc. It benefited 1,388 people.

Creating and connecting the drinking water service – Petite Rivière de l’Artibonite
From 2019 to 2022, HAMAP-Humanitaire supported the commune of Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite in setting up its drinking water service and connecting residents to the network. The project benefited 16,000 people.

Programme to improve essential services in Saint-Marc
From 2017 to 2022, HAMAP-Humanitaire ran a programme to improve the essential services of the town of Saint-Marc, in the Artibonite department. Run with SESAM, OREPA Centre and the town council of Saint-Marc, the programme benefited 80,000 people.
