The Democratic Republic of the Congo holds more than 50% of Africa's fresh water resources, thanks in particular to the Congo river and its vast river system.
Yet access to drinking water remains inadequate for a large share of the population.

According to UNICEF, only 52% of the population has access to an improved water point, and nearly 33 million people living in rural areas have no access to good-quality water.
The gap between urban and rural areas is wide: most of the urban population has access to an improved water source, against only 22% in rural areas.
Sanitation is one of the DRC's main development challenges.
Despite abundant water resources, wastewater collection and treatment infrastructure remains very limited.
It is estimated that only 8% of wastewater is treated, while most is discharged straight into the environment, contributing to the pollution of watercourses and groundwater.
This situation helps spread waterborne diseases such as cholera, typhoid and diarrhoea, which are among the leading causes of illness in the country.

Our work
ACTING FOR WATER
IN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO
In Sola, an isolated rural commune in Tanganyika, HAMAP has captured and protected a water source, built a 55 m³ water tower and laid 3 km of network with 6 standpipes and 5 administrative connections.
Local people are taught good hygiene practice and management committees have been set up.
A second, extension phase is under way, with a second rising main, a further 3 km of network, 8 new standpipes and 8 private connections.

Extending the water network in the rural commune of Sola
Begun more than five years ago, the international cooperation between the Syndicat des Eaux du Centre-Ouest (SECO) and the Fondation des Amis du Père Mwishabongo Mukwanga Norbert (FAPMMN), supported by HAMAP-Humanitaire, has made it possible to improve access to drinking water in a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This French and Congolese partnership was also made possible by the financial support of several French institutions, including the essential contribution of the Loire Bretagne water agency.

Water and sanitation at Panzi hospital in Bukavu
As part of the decentralised cooperation between Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, the City of Montpellier, Panzi General Hospital, the university hospitals of Montpellier and Nîmes, the Occitanie regional water utility, the University of Montpellier and the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine, a series of exchanges led to a project to improve access to drinking water and sanitation at Panzi hospital, in Bukavu. Founded in 1999 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, Panzi hospital faces several water, hygiene and sanitation challenges.

Drinking water supply for the people of Sola
From 2020 to 2023, HAMAP-Humanitaire worked in the rural commune of Sola, in the province of Katanga, to supply its people with drinking water. Run with the FAPMMN Foundation, the project benefited 5,000 people.
