Water and sanitation at Panzi hospital in Bukavu
The project
THE CONTEXT
As part of the decentralised cooperation between Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole, the City of Montpellier, Panzi General Hospital, the university hospitals of Montpellier and Nîmes, the Occitanie regional water utility, the University of Montpellier and the Montpellier-Nîmes Faculty of Medicine, a series of exchanges led to a project to improve access to drinking water and sanitation at Panzi hospital, in Bukavu.
Founded in 1999 by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, Panzi hospital faces several water, hygiene and sanitation challenges. As the security situation in Bukavu has deteriorated sharply, HAMAP-Humanitaire is supporting a project to strengthen hygiene practices and provide emergency support to the hospital teams.
