Mauritania is a Sahelian country with an arid climate and limited water resources.
Rural communities often depend on wells, boreholes and community water points, whose availability varies with the seasons.

Some of the country's towns, including the capital Nouakchott, are supplied by abstraction from the neighbouring Senegal river.
Despite some progress, population growth, rapid urbanisation and the effects of climate change are placing growing pressure on water resources.
Access to improved sanitation facilities remains uneven, particularly in rural areas and on the outskirts of the larger towns.
Wastewater management is still limited and mains sewerage networks cover only a small part of the country.
In some places, wastewater and solid waste are inadequately disposed of, which can lead to pollution and waterborne disease.
Seasonal flooding in urban areas, notably in Nouakchott, sometimes makes sanitation problems worse.

ACTING FOR WATER
IN MAURITANIA
In Nouadhibou, Mauritania's economic capital, HAMAP has rehabilitated and built sanitation blocks in 8 primary schools and then in 8 secondary schools.
In all, 56 sanitation facilities have been rehabilitated and 64 new ones built.
Awareness sessions on good hygiene practice are held for pupils, parents and teaching staff.
School health and maintenance management committees are set up and trained in every school.

Building and rehabilitating sanitation facilities in secondary schools
Since 2023, HAMAP-Humanitaire has been building and rehabilitating sanitation facilities in eight secondary schools in Nouadhibou. Run with RONG, the project is benefiting 9,312 pupils and staff.

From 2019 to 2021, HAMAP-Humanitaire built and rehabilitated school sanitation blocks in Nouadhibou. Run with the Nouadhibou region and RONG, the project benefited 5,620 pupils and staff.
