BENINDecentralised cooperation for drinking water supply and sanitation in Aplahoué
In rural Benin, access to drinking water and sanitation remains a significant challenge despite the progress made in recent years.
Part of the population still depends on traditional wells, boreholes or water points that are sometimes far from homes, which makes the daily water supply difficult, particularly in the dry season.

On sanitation, access to improved toilets remains limited in many villages, and open defecation is still practised in some regions.
This situation helps spread waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.
The difficulties are often linked to a lack of infrastructure, maintenance costs and certain socio-cultural habits.
Government bodies and development organisations are continuing their efforts to improve access to drinking water, promote hygiene and strengthen sanitation facilities in rural areas.

ACTING FOR WATER
IN BENIN
In Aplahoué, in the department of Couffo, HAMAP is rehabilitating 54 boreholes fitted with hand pumps and building public latrines at the Azové and Kissamey markets.
We promote the sale of household latrines meeting Benin's health standards and are setting up delegated public management for sanitation facilities.
School sanitation blocks are being built and hygiene awareness campaigns are run in the commune's 28 villages.

Decentralised cooperation for water and sanitation in Aplahoué
From 2017 to 2022, HAMAP-Humanitaire supported the decentralised cooperation between Ramonville Saint-Agne and the commune of Aplahoué, in the department of Couffo, on water and sanitation for 28 villages. The project benefited 60,779 people.

Improving educational and living conditions in school infrastructure and orphanages in the commune of Aplahoué, Benin
The commune of Aplahoué, in the Couffo department, lies in south-west Benin. The communes of Aplahoué and Ramonville Saint-Agne, linked by decentralised cooperation since 2017, have worked with HAMAP-Humanitaire from the start of their partnership on a project partly supported by the Adour-Garonne Water Agency.

Cooperation to improve access to education, water and sanitation
Linked by decentralised cooperation since 2022, the commune of Tori Bossito and the commune of Mana, in French Guiana, aim to develop water and sanitation in the Beninese commune. The two partners approached the NGO HAMAP-Humanitaire to design and monitor a project to improve access to school infrastructure in five schools in the commune.
