Improving access to water, sanitation and hygiene in Dang Kambet commune
The project
THE CONTEXT
Dang Kambet is an isolated commune in Sandan district, Kampong Thom province, in the Stung Sen basin. Sixty-three kilometres from the provincial capital, it is made up of five villages and around 600 households, most of them farming families.
Households mainly drink bottled water, and otherwise fall back on private tube wells and surface water. Those sources are widely contaminated by biological and chemical pollution, with high turbidity and hardness, and the existing wells do not meet installation and maintenance standards.
As for sanitation, 47 % of residents practise open defecation, which puts the quality of soil and groundwater at immediate risk. Waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera are common, and children are particularly vulnerable.

AIMS AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives
- Improve access to drinking water and sanitation facilities and support good hygiene practices in the Stung Sen basin
Main activities
- Drinking water supply : A drinking water supply system built in the commune: solar borehole, reservoir, gravity-fed network and connections.
- Management committee : A village water management committee set up, trained and supported.
- Awareness raising : Awareness raising on hygiene and the proper use of water, particularly in the commune's 5 schools.
- Latrines : 75 latrines built for vulnerable families and in 5 schools.
