In Senegal, HAMAP-Humanitaire is working in the commune of Dabo for the benefit of 5,400 people. The project was initiated by the local association APIT Humanitaire (Action pour la Promotion des Initiatives Territoriales), which passed on to us the needs expressed by the population and the local council. The commune's distribution network has been out of service for 7 years and covers only part of the area.

Setting up the project

To respond as well as possible to what people asked for, HAMAP-Humanitaire, in partnership with local actors, put together a project with three main strands:

  • The construction and rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities suited to residents;
  • Raising beneficiaries' awareness of practices linked to water use (water management, handwashing, the environment, paying for water);
  • Building the capacity of the management committee and training it, so that the infrastructure can be run and maintained.

Renovating and extending the distribution network will give the target population access to drinking water as close as possible to their homes. To that end, the following work is being carried out:  

  • Rehabilitation of the water tower and the network, and extension of the latter: the structure supporting the water tower needs rehabilitation. The water network will be extended by approximately 7 km.
  • Standpipes and private connections: as the network is to be renovated and extended, the commune will have a total of 10 standpipes. The five main junctions and the commune's schools will be fitted with standpipes so that the most disadvantaged people have access to drinking water. In addition, 109 private connections will be made, creating positive momentum for connecting to the network.
  • Five selected schools will have sanitation blocks built. The number of blocks per school was set according to the standard of 1 toilet for 35 people. Furthermore, to make sanitation easier for households and create positive momentum around hygiene, 109 private latrines and soakaway washing areas will be installed.
