Projects to improve access to water, education and sanitation

Working with its partners, HAMAP-Humanitaire is running several projects to bring lasting improvements to people's living conditions, particularly in education, access to drinking water and sanitation.

Here are a few examples of school canteens and latrines to be refurbished:

Tori Bossito – Mana (French Guiana) project

A one-year project serving education

A one-year project was launched to improve access to education in five primary schools, benefiting 1,175 pupils.

Activities carried out

  • Drilling boreholes for access to drinking water
  • Hygiene awareness raising
  • Construction of a pilot school canteen
  • Creation of a storage area
  • Staff training

Total budget: 185,000 €

Facilities to be refurbished

Work is also planned to improve:

  • School canteens
  • Existing latrines

Municipality of So-Ava

Identifying priority needs

A meeting with the municipal teams identified several essential needs:

  • Building and managing latrines
  • Improving waste collection
  • Refurbishing drinking water facilities
  • Developing school canteens

Prospects for cooperation

Projects are envisaged as part of the partnership with Maripasoula (French Guiana), particularly around:

  • The environment
  • WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene)
  • Young people

Municipality of Ouidah – Sinnamary (French Guiana)

Developing infrastructure

The municipality is continuing its development efforts through:

  • Two major sanitation projects
  • Strengthening educational facilities
  • Developing vocational training

These initiatives are also part of a wider drive to develop the area's tourism potential.

Aplahoue – Ramonville (France) project

A project in several phases

HAMAP-Humanitaire is supporting the municipality of Ramonville in carrying out the second phase of a school and community sanitation project.

Activities completed and under way

  • Refurbishment of latrines in four schools
  • Construction of 3 stand-alone water points
  • Installation of latrine blocks in:
    • 4 schools
    • 1 orphanage (Ange Sentinelle)

Bringing local facilities back into service

  • The Azove and Kissamey sanitation shops back in operation
  • New managers appointed
