The governor of Bethlehem, Mr Kamel Hamid, the mayor of Beit Fajjar (Bethlehem governorate), Mr Akram Taqatqa, the mayor of Lescar (Pyrenees-Atlantiques), Mr Christian Laine, and his deputy, Ms Valerie Revel, inaugurated a water storage reservoir in the Beit Fajjar industrial zone on 25 February 2020.
The building of this reservoir was eagerly awaited
It separates the water networks of the industrial zone from those of the residential areas and improves the quality of the drinking water. The aim is to develop the area while improving residents' access to drinking water.
The decentralised cooperation programme between the Palestinian municipality of Beit Fajjar and the French municipality of Lescar.
This inauguration is part of the three-year decentralised cooperation programme between the two municipalities, focused on improving the Beit Fajjar water network.
HAMAP-Humanitaire confirms its determined work to improve access to water and sanitation
Supported by the NGO HAMAP-Humanitaire, this project is funded by French local authorities, the partner water boards, the Adour-Garonne Water Agency and the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
Works carried out in 3 phases
The first, one-year phase delivered a master plan and priority works. The visit of this delegation led by the mayor of Lescar made it possible to confirm the launch of phases 2 and 3 on water for the next two years, to meet civil society actors in Beit Fajjar with a view to exchanges between civil societies, and to build ties of solidarity between the two territories. A delegation led by the mayor of Beit Fajjar travelled to Lescar as early as 6 March to study how the partner French water boards work politically, and so to inform thinking on how the public water service should be organised.
