The global Coronavirus pandemic has shown how vitally important access to water, sanitation and hygiene is. Washing your hands with soap and water saves lives. It is a basic rule of hygiene, effective and inexpensive.
As hand contact is one of the main ways the Coronavirus is transmitted, the lack of access to drinking water and sanitation services makes the crisis worse. A large part of the world's population is affected: 3 billion people, 40% of the planet's inhabitants, do not have basic facilities at home for washing their hands with soap and water (Joint Monitoring Program report 2019, WHO/UNICEF).
MAKING PROJECTS HAPPEN WITH OUR NGO HAMAP-HUMANITAIRE
Founded in 1999, HAMAP-Humanitaire is an international solidarity Non-Governmental Organisation. Our NGO's purpose is to act concretely so that ever more men, women and children gain access to drinking water and sanitation, to education and vocational training, to health and to safety (mine action). Water and sanitation is one of our strengths, with partners in more than 20 countries. So, with your help, we can do a great deal!
We work in around fifteen countries, mainly Haiti, Burkina Faso, Benin, Senegal, Tunisia, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Comoros and Madagascar.
HOW CAN WE ACT TO PROTECT THE POOREST FROM COVID-19?
We have many projects waiting for funding before they can start. Our work is easy to follow: we act directly with the beneficiaries (a village, a commune). We work exclusively by strengthening local resources, which means we support a serious local partner in delivering their own water project, in order to help the communities served become self-reliant.
We respond only to local requests coming from a particular country. It is our partners who tell us about their projects, and we decide to support them if certain prerequisites are met.
To carry out our work, we make sure a productive dialogue is in place between all local actors: the authorities, the population, the project holder, the associations and so on. Only then do we start the project.
It is vital that people take ownership of the project and are able to keep the service running.
Raising community awareness of hygiene and water use is a must. Training local actors is essential, and it is what we do! That is how they become fully self-reliant, and how we work towards the resilience of these communities in the face of water-related risks and health crises such as Covid-19.

We also play an advocacy role so that the sustainable development goals are met worldwide. Alongside 39 other associations and NGOs, our NGO HAMAP-Humanitaire supports the « Water is a right » campaign led by Coalition Eau.
« We must encourage cooperation to solve the global water crisis and increase resilience to the effects of climate change, so that everyone has access to water, especially the most vulnerable among us » as Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, reminds us.
With Coalition Eau we contributed to the publication of an open letter entitled « Covid-19 and drinking water: the State on the front line », calling on public authorities to act on the water crisis, in France and internationally.
