Guinea is often called the "water tower of West Africa", because several of the region's great rivers, such as the Niger, the Senegal and the Gambia, rise there.
The country has substantial water resources thanks to its many rivers, natural springs, groundwater and heavy rainfall.

Despite this abundance, access to drinking water remains a significant challenge, above all in rural areas where part of the population has no regular access to safe water.
Distribution infrastructure is often inadequate or poorly maintained.
This situation helps spread diseases linked to contaminated water, while population growth and urbanisation increase demand for drinking water.
Progress has been made in recent years, but the gap between town and countryside persists. Sanitation is a major challenge in Guinea.
According to international estimates, only around 25 to 30% of the population has an adequate sanitation service, while a large share uses rudimentary facilities.
Wastewater collection and treatment systems are often inadequate, leading to direct discharges into the environment.
This encourages the contamination of water resources and the spread of disease.

Our work
ACTING FOR WATER
IN GUINEA
In Timbi Touni, in the prefecture of Pita, HAMAP is installing 80 additional private connections on the existing 20 km network.
An operations assistant and an expert consultant have been deployed to strengthen management capacity.
Management software has been installed and the teams trained to use it.
Awareness sessions on hygiene and water management are held.
The model is being replicated in the neighbouring commune of Timbi Madina, with a technical study for a new water and sanitation project.

Guinea is known as the water tower of West Africa, yet access to safe drinking water remains a challenge: an estimated 65 % of the rural population has access to drinking water, against 80 % in urban areas, and only 11 % of Guineans living in rural areas are thought to have sanitation facilities. HAMAP-Humanitaire and the ADTTF, a French association for the development of Timbi Touni, have worked together in the Fouta Djallon for several years.

Access to water and sanitation in the district of N’Dantawi
Although Guinea is considered the water tower of Africa, access to safe drinking water remains a challenge. In rural areas, most people walk several kilometres to draw water from boreholes built by individuals or NGOs.

Improving the management of the Timbi Touni water network
From 2020 to 2025, HAMAP-Humanitaire supported the rural commune of Timbi Touni in improving the management of its water network. Run with the commune and the ADTTF, with the support of the SEDIF, the project benefited 20,000 people.
