The project
THE CONTEXT
Guinea is known as the water tower of West Africa, yet access to safe drinking water remains a challenge: an estimated 65 % of the rural population has access to drinking water, against 80 % in urban areas, and only 11 % of Guineans living in rural areas are thought to have sanitation facilities.
HAMAP-Humanitaire and the ADTTF, a French association for the development of Timbi Touni, have worked together in the Fouta Djallon for several years. Following the success of the Timbi Touni water service, the neighbouring commune of Timbi Madina, 30 km from Pita and home to more than 50,000 people, asked for their support to strengthen its own network and its access to sanitation.

AIMS AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives
- Improve living conditions in the commune of Timbi Madina through lasting access to drinking water, hygiene and sanitation.
Main activities
- Access to drinking water : A drinking water supply system (boreholes, solar pumping stations, water towers), rehabilitation and extension of the distribution network, standpipes and household connections.
- Sanitation : A sanitation assessment and the organisation of the sector, sanitation blocks in public places: health centres, schools and the market.
- A service that lasts : Training of the management unit, software and support for organising the service, stronger capacities among municipal services and local stakeholders.
- Awareness raising : Awareness sessions on sound water management, hygiene practices and reforestation.
