Water for Mohoro – Expanding Access to Safe Drinking Water in the Municipality of Itsahidi

The project

THE CONTEXT

As part of their decentralized cooperation partnership, the Ngazidja Governorate and the Dunkirk Urban Community (DUC) launched a project in 2022 to provide drinking water to six villages in the municipality of Itsahidi. This project, now completed, has provided the population with infrastructure for access to drinking water and a municipal water service. The latter involves a management model that is innovative for the country, bringing together the National Water Distribution and Operations Company (SONEDE) and a professionalized community association, the Municipal Water Services Group (GCSE).

This new project, which can be viewed as a second phase, aims to expand drinking water coverage to new villages in the municipality, including the municipal seat, Foumbouni. Building on the awareness-raising strategy implemented between 2022 and 2025, the project seeks to support the new service as it establishes its structure, while also incorporating a program to improve access to water, sanitation, and hygiene in the municipality’s elementary schools.
