Water for Itsahidi: Providing Drinking Water to Six Villages in the Municipality of Itsahidi
The project
THE CONTEXT
As part of their decentralized cooperation partnership, the Ngazidja Governorate and the Dunkirk Urban Community (DUC) have launched a project to provide drinking water to six villages in the municipality of Itsahidi in the Mbadjini-East region. The project aims to construct a drinking water supply system to meet the needs of the beneficiary communities (Chindini, Dzahadjou, Midjendjeni, Ndzouani, Ouroveni, and Sima Ambouani) using water from a borehole drilled in 2017 by the French Development Agency. In addition, discussions with sectoral authorities led to the formalization of a shared management model between the National Water Supply and Distribution Company (SONEDE) and a professionalized community association. The project, which began in 2022, was completed with some delay in the first half of 2026 with the commissioning of the drinking water supply network and the launch of the related service.

AIMS AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives
- Improve the living conditions and health of residents in the villages of Dzahadjou, Sima, Ambouani, Midjendjeni, Chindini, Ndzouani, and Ouroveni by enhancing their access to safe drinking water and sanitation in a sustainable manner.
Main activities
- Construction by CGC of a drinking water supply system, including solar-powered pumping, treatment, storage, and gravity-fed distribution to public water fountains and private connections in the six villages.
- Raising awareness among local stakeholders about issues related to water, sanitation, and service management through the 2Mains association.
- Implementation of strong project governance to ensure the involvement of stakeholders (Ministry, DGEME, local communities).
- Structuring of the community association (GCSE), recruitment, training, and support for staff members.
- Development of a sustainable management model to ensure water services that address the region’s challenges and comply with the sectoral framework.
