Project to improve access to water and sanitation and preserve the environment

Commune of Mellouleche

The project

THE CONTEXT

HAMAP-Humanitaire is project management assistant for the decentralised cooperation between the communes of Ramonville Saint-Agne and Mellouleche. Launched in 2015, the cooperation aims to strengthen access to water and sanitation in the Tunisian commune. It has connected 141 new homes, or 900 people, to the SONEDE public network and renovated the toilet blocks in Mellouleche's primary schools.

The Mellouleche municipal council elected in 2018 (the first municipal elections held since the "Arab Spring" revolution of 2011) confirmed drinking water connections as a priority for support from French cooperation, and 59 additional homes are to be connected. The project also extends the cooperation to protecting the coastline, by providing sanitary facilities (showers, washbasins, toilets) for the coastal area developed by the commune for leisure and sport.
