Energy self-sufficiency for Kobayat hospital

Kobayat, North Lebanon 2023-2024

The project

THE CONTEXT

Since 2019, Lebanon has been sinking into a political and economic crisis that has severely affected the stability and the functioning of Notre-Dame de la Paix hospital in Kobayat. The crisis has badly hit the country’s energy production, and the hospital’s in particular: since 2019, the facility has had only two hours of mains electricity per twenty-four hours, the State having cut its fuel imports for power stations that are themselves ageing.

The hospital acquired two generators with a maximum capacity of 200 and 320 kW to cover the gaps. But fuel is becoming ever more expensive and eats into a budget that no longer allows investment to maintain a quality of care that is vital for the region. A diagnostic and feasibility study was carried out in 2022: building on its conclusions and models, the project rests on the achievable assumption of supplying 60% of the hospital’s energy needs through a hybrid renewable energy system combining solar, wind and batteries, thereby cutting to 40% the share of its electricity consumption produced by diesel generators, against 100% previously.
