Drinking water and delegated public service management – Tanandava Station

Until early 2020, the population of Tanandava Station obtained its water either from wells and traditional water sources or by collecting surface water. The main challenges in accessing water were related to water quality, the distance to water sources, long wait times, and limited available quantities. In general, the water supply remained inadequate in terms of both quality and quantity. The construction of a drinking water supply system covering the entire municipal seat, along with the appointment of a service operator, resolved the problem of access to drinking water in the municipal seat. Furthermore, the sanitation access rate prior to the project’s launch was 1% at the commune level, confirming the practice of open defecation among the population. This practice was attributed to a lack of awareness, materials for latrine construction, and water for cleaning. Awareness-raising activities have helped bring about a change in practices, particularly in the area around the municipal seat and in securing the area surrounding the borehole. The construction of public restrooms by the African Development Bank (AfDB), managed by the concessionaire, is a solution being considered to improve hygiene practices in the municipality.
