This project is part of the Senegalese government’s ongoing review of its national mine action strategy. Following implementation of the previous strategy, significant results were achieved in the fields of mine clearance, risk education, victim assistance and advocacy. However, major efforts remain to be undertaken with a view to the total eradication of mines by 2026, the new deadline set by the National Commission in charge of implementing the Ottawa Convention. The implementation of this action plan would contribute to achieving the objectives of the Plan Sénégal Emergent (PSE) in the southern regions, which still face the problem of mines, affecting an area currently estimated at 1,700,000 m², including 1,200,000 m² in the department of Bignona alone. However, this figure is still an estimate, as the security situation and the presence of the MFDC in the department make certain areas inaccessible or inaccessible, and ultimately prevent non-technical surveys from being carried out. So far, the only demining activities underway are in the Nyassa and Ziguinchor departments.
