Water and sanitation remain vital issues for Madagascar\u2019s development. In 2018, UNICEF and the National Institute of Statistics (INSTAT) reported that only 29% of the population in the Atsimo-Andrefana region had access to safe water\u2014one of the lowest figures in Madagascar.
\nHAMAP-Humanitaire is working to support improvements in this sector by assisting with various water and sanitation projects in southwestern municipalities (Tanandava Station, Ejeda). The project aims to establish a drinking water supply system in the seat of the rural municipality of Basibasy. The goal is to provide the population with a safe water source with a view to expanding its use throughout the entire commune.
\nIn recent years, the effects of climate change\u2014particularly decreased rainfall\u2014have worsened living conditions and access to drinking water for communities in the southern part of the island. The drought has forced the most vulnerable populations to migrate to other regions.
