meeting between a Montfortian priest visiting France and a volunteer doctor, a member of the  <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>FRIENDS of HAMAP-Humanitaire in CATALONIA<\/strong><\/span> , gave rise to this project.<\/p>\n<p>Father Joseph HILAIRE, whose congregation is firmly established in Haiti, is also a doctor, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Medicine and Health Sciences and the secretary general of that university, located in Port-au-Prince.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20178 alignright\" Poverty has risen, making access to basic services such as education, health and protection even harder.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-c441983\" data-id=\"c441983\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fcc3880 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"fcc3880\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Surviving day by day<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0a37dbc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0a37dbc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>More than 6 million Haitians (out of a population of around 11 million) live below the poverty line (60%), with their fundamental rights denied.<\/p>\n<p>It has escaped no one that growing insecurity is added to all of this.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-a24d9f6 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"a24d9f6\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-096bc99\" data-id=\"096bc99\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9c9d224 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9c9d224\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Canaan, a land of welcome, yes, but&#8230;<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-86e7d50 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"86e7d50\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>After the earthquake of 12 January 2010 that struck Port-au-Prince (230,000 dead), survivors took refuge on a hill north-east of the city, in a very arid, hostile but free and available area (albeit with no legal status). That is how the  <strong>Canaan<\/strong> neighbourhood came into being, in the commune of Croix des Bouquets, a vast slum that is now home to more than 85,000 people.<\/p>\n<p>It is this neighbourhood that Father Hilaire has taken charge of and for which the Friends of HAMAP in Catalonia are mobilising.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-6172a54 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"6172a54\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-17810f3\" data-id=\"17810f3\" class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Access to care for the Canaan slum<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-32cfb3b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"32cfb3b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>So  <strong>the Friends of HAMAP in Catalonia<\/strong>  decided to help, in the following ways:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Converting an existing room into a clinic<\/li>\n<li>Improving the clinic&#039;s access to water with a water tank<\/li>\n<li>Organising remote training, education and awareness sessions (hygiene, contraception, AIDS, diabetes, eating habits and so on) for local health workers<\/li>\n<li>Organising occasional volunteer health missions to support the local teams<\/li>\n<\/ul><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-03b847e elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"03b847e\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-be2c91b\" data-id=\"be2c91b\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap funded?<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1f26e0a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1f26e0a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<p>A 2021 call for projects from the Pierre Fabre Foundation then came along as an opportunity, and proved a real catalyst for getting the project under way.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-bcdadbf elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"bcdadbf\"
