The girls throw coloured powder over one another, they dance, and they seem happy to be celebrating again after two years without.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section>\n

Outside Saint Joseph school the children run and shout, happy too to be back together. Their classes have resumed with their teachers and classmates, after two years in which the school benches stood empty. Life seems to be returning to what it was. But the smiles do not erase the difficulties young girls face in India.<\/p>\n

One of them is seven years old. She dances proudly, with no sign that her mother has left and that she has been left with her alcoholic father. In the slum, many men are alcoholics and their meagre wages often go on bottles in which they drown their problems of poverty, family and children. Another girl plays with no apparent worry while her mother has gone away for heart surgery. The operation takes place a dozen hours by bus from Mumbai, in her home village. Her husband went with her, leaving their six- and seven-year-old children in the slum. These lost children are often supported by a grandmother, who stands in for the absent parent and earns a few rupees through her work to be able to care for them financially. Sometimes, after dark, some of these grandmothers go to the bins to salvage what can be salvaged, whether food or objects to resell. The work of the GIFT <\/a>team means these families receive food rations and that the children get an education.<\/p>\n

Then there are the women who, at 20 or 21, are seriously preparing for their 14th standard exams, the equivalent of the second year of university, which take place in March and April. One of them is overwhelmed. For two months she has had a job as a sales assistant in a clothes shop. The 10,000 rupees she earns there each month go on the rent of the family home and on food so that her two younger sisters can survive. She has just enough left to pay for her transport and food rations. Her mother died a few years ago. Her father left for an unknown destination, leaving no address.<\/p>\n

For these young women too, the moral support of the GIFT team and the financial support of sponsors are indispensable help as they take their first steps in working life. The day care centre becomes their refuge, the one place where they are treated with dignity and care, listened to, fed, guided and helped by the GIFT team.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/section><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
