in managing the facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inequalities between urban and rural areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Persistent health risks<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the progress made, many projects show that without:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Suitable management<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The involvement of local people<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A long-term vision<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An integrated approach led by HAMAP-Humanitaire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Present in Senegal for 13 years, HAMAP-Humanitaire has developed an approach based on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local governance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raising public awareness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three projects illustrate this approach:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sandiara<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bokiladji<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Velingara<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sandiara: a territory-wide vision for water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards universal access to water<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The municipality of Sandiara is working towards universal access to water for its 28 localities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some areas had no infrastructure at all before the intervention<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inadequate sanitation facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Major public health issues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A project structured in several phases<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Preliminary studies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extension of the water network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Development of a master plan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Current phase:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extending the network to several localities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connecting households<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building sanitation facilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Setting up wastewater management systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A project supported by many partners<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Adour-Garonne Water Agency<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Occitanie Region<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>SIVOM SAGE<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>French and Senegalese ministries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bokiladji: securing access to water and reducing inequalities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A critical situation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people of Bokiladji face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Distances of 3 to 5 km to reach water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A heavy burden on women and children<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Health risks linked to untreated water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequences:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Frequent waterborne diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risks to women&#039;s safety<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A brake on agricultural development<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Concrete solutions put in place<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project provides for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Building a drinking water network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hygiene awareness raising<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training in water management<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Partners:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>APIT Humanitaire et Developpement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Water agencies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Local authorities and foundations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An approach centred on self-reliance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim goes beyond infrastructure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Passing on skills<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Giving communities responsibility<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sustainable management of the facilities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Velingara: a key sanitation challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A major health issue<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the department of Velingara:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than 50% of the population without suitable latrines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>High health risks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A fragile water table<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An integrated water and sanitation project<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Activities carried out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extending the water network<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Connecting 175 households<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building latrines in schools and health centres<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strengthening local capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Defining how the facilities will be managed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Raising awareness of good hygiene practice<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training local actors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards integrated and sustainable management<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water as a lever for development<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Access to water and sanitation makes it possible:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To improve public health<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To reduce social and gender inequalities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To support education and employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To strengthen people&#039;s self-reliance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An essential approach for the future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work carried out in Senegal shows
