{"id":10915,"date":"2026-04-06T14:45:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T13:45:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hamap-humanitaire.org\/?p=10915"},"modified":"2026-09-05T07:56:47","modified_gmt":"2026-09-05T06:56:47","slug":"discussions-on-a-potential-project-in-cameroon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hamap-humanitaire.org\/en\/discussions-on-a-potential-project-in-cameroon\/","title":{"rendered":"Discussions on a potential project in Cameroon"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A first exploratory mission to Cameroon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From 26 January to 2 February, a HAMAP-Humanitaire project manager carried out a first mission to Cameroon to explore the prospects for action on access to drinking water and sanitation, and to identify the needs of local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A context marked by unequal access to water<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite substantial water resources, Cameroon faces an uneven distribution of access to water between urban and rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main issues identified<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unequal access between rural and urban areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Difficulty in tapping groundwater<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inadequate water quality in several regions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited or poorly functioning sanitation infrastructure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater vulnerability to floods and droughts linked to climate change<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although more than 35% of the rural population has access to a water source, the water is often unfit to drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A worrying health situation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Limited access to safe drinking water has direct consequences for people&#039;s health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Examples of impacts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reliance on unsafe sources such as rivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of hand pumps for non-food purposes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emergence of waterborne diseases such as diarrhoea and salmonellosis<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased risks for children<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some villages, the existing infrastructure does not meet residents&#039; actual needs, which compounds their day-to-day difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A mission structured around several stages<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission made it possible to take stock of needs and of project opportunities across different areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Organisational assessment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A first discussion was held with the Mapubi association, based in Edea and a partner in the project led by Cultude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Analysis of how the organisation operates<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allocation of roles and responsibilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identification of capacity-building needs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reflection on coordinating future activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Visits to the target areas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Visits were carried out in the municipality of Massock Songloulou (Songmbengue, Kahn, Onna, Pendjock) to assess conditions of access to water and sanitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Main findings<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hand pumps whose water is not always safe to drink<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>River water used for drinking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Low coverage of water points in some villages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No sanitation facilities in some schools<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Additional burden on women linked to treating the water<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Identifying social and gender issues<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Time spent collecting and treating water<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impact on women&#039;s daily activities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Unequal access to water resources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Importance of building a gender dimension into future projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Meetings with institutional and civil society actors<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discussions were held with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The departmental water delegate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Several local NGOs:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alliance pour la maitrise de l&#039;eau<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Association pour la Solidarite et le Developpement Durable (AS2D)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Demain Avenir<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These meetings also opened up the prospect of consortium arrangements between actors in the sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opportunities for collaboration and capacity building<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission highlighted strong potential for cooperation between local and international actors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prospects identified<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Setting up multi-stakeholder partnerships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building the capacity of local organisations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing collaborative approaches<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Designing projects suited to local realities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Particular attention to including stakeholders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The discussions showed strong involvement from local communities, at times greater than that of the institutional authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against this backdrop, one of the main challenges for future projects will be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>to ensure that stakeholders are better included<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to strengthen coordination between actors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to build lasting interventions suited to conditions on the ground<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"992\" height=\"744\" src=\"https:\/\/hamap-humanitaire.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/des-discussions-sur-un-potentiel-projet-au-cameroun-featured_img.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10105\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hamap-humanitaire.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/des-discussions-sur-un-potentiel-projet-au-cameroun-featured_img.webp 992w, https:\/\/hamap-humanitaire.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/des-discussions-sur-un-potentiel-projet-au-cameroun-featured_img-768x576.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 992px) 100vw, 992px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Towards a lasting commitment in Cameroon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This exploratory mission is a first step towards developing concrete activities in the country.
